Typical Activities

Activities in Second Grade are planned to facilitate students' ability to locate and utilize infor-mation in developmentally ap-propriate ways. Second grade students begin to use shared folders on the LFCDS server to save their work. In second grade, students are comfortable interacting with the components of the computer and are ready to use the computer for the completion of tasks. Students begin to explore information resources and ways to convey completed projects. Students are introduced to a variety of multimedia resources and work collaboratively with their peers in completing projects. Students use mathematical reasoning to program computerized robots to navigate simple mazes.

Students are introduced to tools for gathering and organizing information used towards com-pleting classroom activities. Students utilize various forms of technology to complete curricu-lar assignments. They learn to take information from more than one source and synthesize the facts into cohesive thoughts.

During their weekly library visits, second graders become familiar with a wide variety of easy fiction to satisfy their independent reading needs. Lengthy book talks, focusing on an author, a genre, or a topic are and important part of the lessons.
Exploring the conventions and use of the library catalog is the other major component of second grade library time.
